Space is the most mysterious "thing" in creation. It has no limits; no beginning and no end. It can exist with or without anything being in it and it continues to exist even when something material occupies it. It is not displaced, like water, but remains itself in the same place and same size as the thing which occupies it.. When an object is moved from a space, the space is still the same. Somehow, and this is deep, space itself must be "in" something.
Space had to have existed before matter, or was created at the same moment as matter, otherwise matter would have had no place to be in. We hear about the "expanding universe". Since space by its very nature has been limitless from the beginning and non-living matter cannot produce more of itself, expansion can take place only through new creation or existing matter moving further up and out into unoccupied space. Whether or not this will some day alter the relationships of existing planets and solar systems, cannot be known.
If that isn't a mystery, I don't know what is.
