I must admit I am hearing challenged. When I say "Huh, it's for real. I didn't understand what was said. I play golf with some people who have learned that pretending not to hear has some value. I am one of those people who lavishes compliments on fellow golfers, even when sometimes it is not deserved. Somehow, most do not reciprocate.
There is one guy who "played" me for some time before I realized his deception. Whenever I complimented him on a shot he pretended not to hear so I would have to repeat it several times. I'm such a trusting person that I got fooled every time. Even now that I know, instead of waiting for his pretense, I automatically say it three or four times to avoid being suckered into saying it. Am a a nice guy or what? Most of the time he doesn't recognize the sarcasm in my tone because he wants to believe it sooo bad.
