Parents used to worry when they sent their kids off to college with a credit card. Would they be able to control its use? Would they understand that there is a limit beyond which they cannot use the card? Do they understand that when you use credit, it has to be paid for at some time?
Today, the parents have applied for credit cards under the kids' names without their consent. Not only that, they have applied for an open ended credit limit. What kind of parents would create debt for their children and stick them with the bill?
We have allowed our government to spend money we don't have for things we don't need for so long that our kids and theirs will be making interest only payments for the rest of their lives.
Everyone would hope for a perfect world. That's idealism. Most of us know it will never happen. That's realism. When realists make decisions that butt heads with idealism, they are called callous, mean and cruel. Often in life we are faced with the old lifeboat dilemma. When the boat is dangerously full and there are still people in the water, do you save those in the boat or take in more people and let everyone perish? Cruel or realistic? You decide.
