LUCUBRATION

It seems as though when we are fully awake some parts of our brains are asleep.  We've all had the experience, when in that state between being awake and being asleep, of flashes of brilliance.  Sometimes it's just the answer to something you were grappling with when awake, like the name of the seventh dwarf, but sometimes even some difficult technical problem.

When these things happen to us it's almost as though a different person has taken control of your brain.  Often you do or say things you know you cannot do or would not say.  If you like to write but have no confidence in your ability, you may compose the most wonderful prose; if a musician or songwriter the most enthralling music or most passionate lyrics.  My favorite is performing the most eloquent speech or closing remarks at trial, even though I'm not a lawyer.  Boy, do I give them hell!

This mysterious world that lurks somewhere in the recesses of our brain knows things we know nothing about.  It can paint word pictures worthy of any artist or invent impressive things.  When you least expect it, you may even discover that you can soar through the skies like an eagle.  In this world, anything is possible.

As difficult as it is to explain some of the things that can and do occur when we are in this state, we must acknowledge that they do.  I doubt if anyone reading this has not had some similar experience  Perhaps the message is that if we want to be smarter, we should sleep more.  Who knows, who cares.  For a few minutes we can all be Nobel prize winners.
