People have accused me of not talking much. They say, "You don't talk much, do you?" or "You're very quiiet". I start to say," Well", but I'm interrupted. That is why I don't talk much. My speaking reflexes are much too slow for me to survive in conversation. I'll say it. I don't speak much because no one will give me a chance! Show me a good listener and I'll show you a slow talker.
Whenever I do find an opening and someone seems to be listening, it doesn't take long for me to realize that they are really listening to someone else's conversation nearby. I don't know how much I actually do talk, you know, whether or not I meet the minimum daily requirement, but I know how much is heard by someone other than myself and that is very little.
I've often wished that I could be as rude and inconsiderate as others. They have a knack for dominating several conversations simultaneously and still find time to interrupt you. I don't know if that should be considered a skill or a lack of manners. I'm not quite sure if I hate or admire them.
I used to believe that if you waited for your turn you might be able to join a conversation. Once I discovered that was a falsehood, I stopped talking. When I got my first text able cell phone, which I resisted, I discovered a fool proof way to have a conversation without interruption, the TEXT MESSAGE! No one can interrupt. You can talk as long as you want. The only drawback is that they don't HAVE to answer you and can pretend they didn't get the message until the next day. I don't know which is worse, being ignored in person or by phone.
Even though I don't get to talk much, at the end of an evening I'm exhausted from darting into opportunities to talk only to be rebuffed. It's almost like a goal line stand. I try for the score but I'm buried under a bunch of conversation heavyweights.
