HEALTH

As a chiropractor I probably have a different concept of health care from most of you.  What is spoken of as "health care" generally is "disease care".  Health care should mean caring for the health you have while you have it.  If you accept this definition, then what we are talking about is the prevention of negative health.

The question of prevention usually is answered with the routine "nutrition, exercise and weight control".  These are great but only scratch the surface.  None of those matter much if your body is not working right.  It's like putting gasoline in a car without an engine.  So, the first cause of good health is a body which is functioning normally or at least as normally as any individual body has the capacity to function.

The end purpose of every function in our bodies is to allow us to move!  If we cannot move, we cannot survive.  This tells me that movement is the most important function of the total body.  Lesson number one, keep moving.  Lesson number two, move correctly or as well as your body is able.  The body structures that are moved are our bones and the movers are our muscles.  If the bones and their relationship to connecting bones is correct, motion will be normal, otherwise the movement will be abnormal in some respect and the connections will experience abnormal stresses which lead to excessive wear and tear.  If not corrected, the body will distort itself  to reduce the effects of the abnormality.    Sounds as though perfect alignment and movement of bones is desirable.  Who does, or tries to, do that?  Give yourself an A+.  YOU ARE RIGHT!  Your friendly, neighborhood chiropractor!!!!  He will determine which,if any, bones are misaligned or subluxated and reposition them manually.  Technically, this is a surgical procedure but we call it an "adjustment" (of the bones, of course).

But there is more.  As you must know the spine is made up of numerous movable bones which form a flexible rod.  Just as a rod does, when you bend the spine it rotates and when you rotate it, it bends.  The things that tell muscles we control what to do are nerves.  Not the ones that break down when you have a nervous breakdown but the ones that carry all the information going to and coming from the brain that instructs the muscle or muscles involved, precisely what to do.  If the action is based on "bad intel" or there's a problem getting instructions to the muscle- well, you can guess what might happen and it ain't pretty.

It's the chiropractor's job and goal to do the best he can to make sure the nerves delivering the intel and those notifying the troops are in as good a working order as possible.  How does he do this?  Sounds complicated.  Actually, the most unimpressive thing about chiropractic is its simplicity.  No one seems to respect something unless it is extremely complicated and can be performed only by geniuses.  Adjustments can be delivered in several ways but the goal is the same, the normalization of spinal bone position and functioning.

We talked about the flexible rod made up of multiple movable bones.  The bones are shaped in a way that a tiny tunnel is formed between the upper and lower bone through which nerves and blood vessels pass.  These tunnels are perfectly sized and shaped when the related bones are aligned properly.  When one or both of the bones are out of alignment, the size and shape of the tunnel is changed. This, we profess, impacts the nerves in a negative way which in turn distorts incoming intel and outgoing orders.  This results in abnormal muscle function from nerves assigned to muscles and abnormal function in all the tissues and organs that do the job of keeping us alive.  As you might expect, the amount of resulting harm depends upon the severity and duration of the abnormal position resulting in nerve stresses.

After you make certain that your body will function as well as it is capable of, eat well, exercise and control your weight.
