I have little patience for the ridiculous unless it is I who is guilty. I have a so-so memory. I tend to remember the good stuff and forget the bad. That's a pretty good combination. It's like people with poor vision who don't see bad stuff, like stains on their clothes, or poor hearing who miss a lot of unnecessary noise, like the phone ringing.
Women tend to have better memories of what men did wrong than what they did right. I'm sure it's a hormonal thing. Men, however, can remember only the things they did right and deny ever having done anything wrong. That's not hormonal, it's denial.
I have heard advice which recommends that to remember something, you should try to forget it, Sounds stupid at first but an analysis of the concept reveals a possible truth. Trying to forget something requires that you remember it to tell yourself what to forget. Repeated enough times, you will remember what you just tried to forget.
But what about telling yourself to remember what you want to remember? Isn't that the same? You have to remember the thing you want to remember to tell yourself to remember it. This may sound the same as trying to forget in order to remember but another factor comes into play. When you want to remember, you are afraid you might forget so the pressure to remember makes it more difficult to remember than to remember trying to forget. When you are trying to remember by the trying the forget technique, there's less pressure because you are pretending you want to forget.
