PETS AND OTHER ANIMALS

Generally speaking, I enjoy looking at many animals and admire their grace and beauty.  Those which we call "domesticated" and  seem to show real affection for their owners present a real mystery.  Why should there be such a powerful attraction and affection between creatures of such a variety of species.  These same animals seem also to develop some kind of  relationships with each other when living together with man, such as cats and dogs.

When we are presented an array of species, we appreciate their differences.  I'm certain that a cat knows that a dog is not a cat yet many seem to be "friends".  What is it in us and they that allows this cross species bonding?  Some of these affections approach that thing we call "love".  Why else would a dog risk its life to save a human?  Why, when a pet owner leaves or dies, would an animal grieve?  Why do pet owners grieve  when their pets die?  Strangely, we even "grieve" if a favorite plant bites the dust.

There appear to be some universal emotions and passions, and why not?  Once a principle is established and it works, why would the Maker not use it in all?  I believe love is universal and the attraction has nothing to do with similarities, differences or appearances but more with mutual caring.  As they say, "Love conquers all."  When love is displayed, it is returned.

I would advise extreme caution when "loving" a lion, tiger or bear- even a gorilla. Horses are OK.
