I am not a constitutional scholar, or any kind for that matter, but I believe I understand what the writers were trying to do.
Our constitution created a form of government in which the people were intended to govern themselves through the election of representatives who would watch out for the peoples' interests. It further limited the power of government to essential tasks like protecting us from our government, foreign enemies and each other. It intended that government could not bully and abuse our citizens, confiscate property, real or otherwise, and to compel behavior in personal matters. It does not give any body the right to micromanage the lives of individuals.
Unfortunately, the conditions which existed at the time that caused these men to declare our independence have been forgotten by those who are now recreating similar abuse of the people. We can see today the same rebellious spirit against government that our founders had against England. It took a revolution then but lets hope we don't have to repeat that now.
Our canons, bullets and swords are our votes. Don't waste them! Political parties don.t give a damn about you or me and will say or do anything to rob us of our votes. If they have a record you can examine, know it and vote accordingly. If you believe your representative has done a good job, vote for him/her: if not, throw the bum out. Even if the other person turns out to be a bum, get rid of him/her next time. Don't blindly support a person because of party because the party rules them and they cannot be themselves.
We can survive as a free nation only when we, the people, live up to our responsibility and select representatives who believe that we, the people, are the government.
