SACRIFICE

A "sacrifice" is a selfless act of surrendering or giving up of something good for the sake of something else considered to be a greater good, usually for someone else.

Sacrifice is something most young people know nothing about even though they have been beneficiaries of the sacrifices of others all their lives.  Sacrifices, usually difficult, are in fact acts of love if made voluntarily but when imposed, especially by those who exempt themselves from the sacrifice, can result in unnecessary hardships.

The militant environmentalists have noble intentions to preserve the planet for future generations and they insist we make sacrifices, many of which are significant  and damaging to our economy, energy and land usage. We all are ready to make reasonable sacrifices to protect the environment. As noted above, many of the loudest, hypocritical voices heard on the subject exempt themselves from sharing in the sacrifices because their life styles require exorbitant uses of energy.  This, incidentally, includes our President.

The principle of sacrifice, when necessary, is good but it should be applied to all things which can affect our future and the lives of those who follow us.  Our economy is in shambles, deficit spending has created a debt which exceeds our ability to control, states and cities are going broke but when asked, those who are the cause of this horror, mainly entitlement spending and government employee unions, will not sacrifice anything to preserve, not our environment, but our country for future generations.  Both are equally important but saving the environment in a responsible way which does not destroy our future is possible.  Those who believe a pristine environment trumps the lives of our people are wrong. Who will be here to enjoy it? Americans will be living in poverty in a paradise.

In a  short 230 some years, we have created the greatest nation in the history of mankind.  We alone have enabled the rest of the world to prosper.  We do more than any other nation to protect the environment, often putting us at a disadvantage, while others continue to pollute with abandon.  The polluting countries laugh at us all the way to the bank.

We are all willing to make reasonable sacrifices but when asked to make sacrifices which are not for an overall greater good, not many will follow.
