I know some think I am heartless, without compassion. Nothing could be further from the truth. When faced with tough choices and one leads to extinction for all and another choice to just some, who, with any sense, would choose the annihilation of everyone. Compassion does not always apply just to a minority. In a case where the majority is also in peril, would you save the minority or the larger number? Again, it is the old lifeboat dilemma.
Poor people are poor for a variety of reasons and, no matter what, there will ALWAYS be some who will be "the poor". When we can, and we always have, we should take care of the "less fortunate". As in a family, when things are good, we enjoy a higher standard of living than when things are not so hot. Many families have had to downsize in the past few years but the Federal government has gone in the opposite direction with destructive consequences. We are on the verge of an utter collapse of our entire system and yet they keep spending more and more. If you understand debt and interest, you must know that when you borrow beyond the point where you can reasonably expect to pay it back, bad things happen. When, even if you confiscated, not just taxed, everything the rich own, you cannot balance your budget, reason tells us you must stop spending no matter how much or who it hurts.
If showing compassion only for a minority or the poor is the definition of compassion, then I plead guilty but if everyone deserves compassion, then I am not heartless but reasonable.
