Many things in life depend upon what we call "a fit". If things don't work well together, we say, "They don't fit". Except for a limited number of professions, many higher education degrees do not fit the conditions of the market place. Although these are not "wasted", it does mean that the jobs these graduates wind up in did not require a specific college degree.
We have had many kinds of discriminatory practices for which we find remedies. Discriminating against non-college graduates for positions which do not require a specific degree, should not be permitted. Experience, intelligence and other personal qualities required for the job can be determined by testing and the non-degree applicant should have a chance at the job. Especially in today's environment, where many degrees are equivalent to high school diplomas of years ago and learning takes place on a daily basis through multimedia, all comers should have a shot. Knowledge does not come only from a classroom.
I believe that many of our most talented people are wasted because of these artificial barriers placed between them, a college education and better jobs and, in the process, deprived of an equal opportunity.
