It is obvious from he preamble to the Constitution that our founders believed that all our rights came from God and that no man could lawfully deprive us of these rights. Any attempt to remove God (not Christ) from public discourse and celebration is an attack upon our Constitution. If these attacks succeed, what immutable authority will become the source of freedom? Royalty? Dictators?
It is amazing how near to perfection our Constitution was, considering the forms of government in existence at the time. First they identified the source of our rights then set about to protect them in the construction of a limited government. The rights of states gave them sovereignty over most matters. They were almost separate countries, unified only in matters which could and should become a shared responsibility.
As much as we like to blame the federal government for today's conditions, most of the blame falls upon the States themselves which have allowed and encouraged federal takeover of their responsibilities and their citizens' freedom. Those who are critical of the so-called "welfare state" of the feds should look and see that the States are the biggest recipients of "welfare" payments. If we believe that dependency created in individuals is bad and destroys incentive, what can we expect from States which have become dependent upon the federal "dole"?
Those States which are petitioning for a separation from the Union should, instead, take back their responsibility so that federal actions have less of an impact on them. I still believe that the best way to accomplish this is for all federal income to come only from the States themselves and not from individual citizens.
