When those you believe tell you their convictions and talk like they would rather die than abandon them, we respect them. When the same people, at the first sight of blood, cut and run, zig-zagging, trying to obscure their footprints and escape blame, it deflates your trust and your ability to trust again.
Those Republicans who voted "yes" on the legislation which will drive us deeper into our grave, may think that the ropa-dopa is going to fool other Republicans. The truth is, they have signed the death warrant of the Republican party. It will NEVER recover. If they are going to give the Dems everything they want anyhow, we may as well let the Dems have both houses. The outcome would be the same.
We had some tough talkers. Had me convinced. They should have called Obama's bluff and taken whatever hit resulted. The resulting pain of the people, including the Democrats. would have to be directed at their "leader" eventually, and most Republicans, though wounded, would know they put up a fight for the right thing. It's easy to let things slide but doing the right thing is hard. It may have immediate, personal consequences, but knowing that down the line, you have made it better for everyone, including your opponents, is reward enough. You'd have a right to be proud and you'd have earned the respect of the American people.
