ETHICS vs. MORALS

Ethics are a code of behavior agreed to among men.  Ethics can be good or bad.  Criminals have an ethic most of us would not agree to. Lawyers, doctors and plumbers all have codes of behavior which spell out specific behaviors which are acceptable and those which are not. Ethics are not laws except for those within that group.

Morals are a code of behavior which describe a relationship between men and God.  Without God, what we call morals would in fact be simple ethics.  In ethics, violators are responsible to members of the group: with morals, violators are responsible to God.  In support of this view, I refer you to a commonly used expression, "It is unethical if not immoral or illegal."  This implies that all three depictions are separate'

When speaking of morals we sometimes hear the question "Whose morals?" If you really mean morals, the answer is God's.  If you ask the question in the first place and don't know the answer, then you are really asking about ethics.  Godless people really should not ask the question in terms of morals. Morality is a law only to people of God.

There are numerous instances where governments have legislated morality.  Since we must separate religion from our government and legislating morality is injecting God into our law, laws legislating morality should be invalid, unless, of course, it is simply an admission that God is right.
