GOLF

Golf is a game, an affliction. an enigma, a compulsion and a paradox- but it is FUN!

Golf is a game in which the player is required to strike the ball repeatedly over a specified distance until the final stroke deposits the ball into a hole in the ground.  If that isn't the dumbest thing humans have ever done for entertainment, I can't think of what is.  But it IS fun.

The moment you step onto a golf course in early morning you know there is a God.  The sight of dew covered, lush green grass, the smell of freshly cut grass and flowers delight the senses of sight and smell.  The rising sun, the stillness warm and calm the beast inside.  It should be like this forever.

Suddenly the rapture is gone as other golfers gradually appear, rattling their clubs and proclaiming who is going to kick whose butt today. All handicaps are settled and conditions for bets arranged and agreed to.  It's tee time!

The game is not just hitting the ball.  It requires carefully planned strategies.  These should be about ball placement, club selection and that kind of technical stuff but it is mainly about how to distract your opponent without being too obvious.  A cough, a dropped club, a whisper, that sort of thing.

Anyone who has not had the feeling that comes with executing a perfect golf shot or putt can't possibly know why a golfer golfs. God, whose main source of amusement is golfers, gives us each a limited number of these "perfect" shots.  This, as they say, is what brings you back.  This, along with enjoying a few hours with friends, is what golf is all about.

In the end, you become aware that golf is not just a game.  It is an experience.
