The elite are fond of saying "We are a country of laws, not men". Doesn't that sound great? Are we?
The words say we are but reality in too many cases disputes that. We've all seen highly placed politicians, celebrities and wealthy people escape the clutches of John Law. Even more irksome are the Presidential pardons of big time criminals and even terrorists. Often it is position, influence and money that dictates who receives "justice" and who doesn't. We even witnessed a President allowing secrets to be sold which can be used for military purposes to a powerful "enemy" country. If a spy had done that he would have been shot.
In our system, we are at the mercy of prosecutors. Without their permission, we cannot prosecute wrongdoers. Recent refusals by the AG of the US to prosecute videotaped crimes being committed is probably the most glaring example of justice run amok. The penalties for phone service theft and video disk copyright violations are hundreds of times more severe than recent decisions in child rape cases.
In too many cases, the perpetrator is depicted as the victim or the victim is humiliated or intimidated into dropping charges. Too often decisions are handed down which defy common sense. Evidence is not allowed for technical reasons. If the evidence is valid otherwise, punish the one who obtained it illegally but allow it at trial.
We probably have as good a system of justice as you'll find on this earth but it still stinks.
