How do you want people to remember you? How do you want your children to remember you and do you care?
Recently I watched a documentary about two women. One had been a prisoner in a Nazi concentration death camp and the other the little daughter of the commandant of that camp. It was a story about the commandant's daughter learning about what her father had done at that camp. It isn't hard to imagine how she felt.
A person's words and actions pretty much reveal that person. Rationalizations to justify what we know to be bad behavior don't deceive most people. When I watch "main stream" movies with the obligatory sex scenes, I wonder what the parents, siblings, spouses and children of those performers feel about that. Depicting it as "art" may satisfy the performer but few others would agree.
People with addictions who destroy themselves and their families cling to the notion that it is an "illness" and therefore not their fault. They need treatment not condemnation they say. Businessmen and professional "thieves" proclaim themselves as "shrewd" not borderline crooks. Criminals who prey upon others and destroy others' lives without remorse don't feel the need to explain their actions.
Ask yourself, if you are one of those described above, is that how you want your children, family and friends to remember you? It is hard to respect anyone who shows no respect for themselves.
