This day we celebrate is probably one of the most important to mankind in all of history. Not only were we freed but we inspired the whole of humanity to struggle for its own freedom. The wave still continues today, especially in the Arab world. How can anyone who watches the images of men, women and children risking their lives against the forces of brutal tyrants not believe that the human spirit longs to be free?
We cannot imagine what our forefathers and early Americans endured to obtain freedom, but if we observe what others are going through today for their freedom, we have a glimpse of what it must have been like. The bravery of today's freedom seekers may even be greater than ours for they face weaponry and force that can annihilate thousands in seconds.
If we could have witnessed our own revolution, maybe we would appreciate our freedom more than we do. Most of us, I'm sure, never reflect on our freedom but take it for granted. Those who would rob us of this freedom don't always come from outside and they are not always armed with rifles. Within a free society, the rules which insure our freedom are sometimes used against us to suppress and oppress us. True freedom requires that everyone within that society always acts in good faith but scoundrels find ways to dupe and deceive the people for their own advantage. Unless we inform ourselves and are diligent in selecting patriots who are true to the original principles of our constitution, we are doomed to a gradual loss of all.
If or when freedom is lost, the only way to regain it is through bloody conflict. Wouldn't it be easier to make sure we do all in our power to keep it? May God bless America and guide us to enduring freedom.
