ARE PEOPLE NECESSARY?

Let's begin with the premise that there is a God.  Even before the "beginning", this timeless, all powerful, non-material being was all alone.  He must have been very lonely, like Howard Hughes who could have or do anything  but hung out mostly by himself.  What fun is that? Oh, there were angels but they were always busy playing harps and singing. What would you do if it had been you?

For some reason we cannot be sure of, He decided to make things He could tinker with so there'd be something to do.  For awhile it must have been fun causing massive explosions and shooting stars all over the place.  But, like anything else, it soon became boring.  Non-living "toys" have limited appeal so He decided to make something more like Himself, something He could interact with, something alive and intelligent like Himself.  And so He created Man.

He must have known from the beginning that a creation that could think for itself and make independent decisions could be hard to control even though He was their "Boss".  Since He created it, he knew human nature well.  They needed an incentive to behave.  He gathered a few "chosen people" and told them, "Listen, I know what temptations you people will have and it will be difficult to be good.  Here are the rules of behavior I expect from all of you, and if you follow them, some day, I'll invite you into my house and you will be happy forever and you'll be my constant companions."  This is what He was after right from the beginning, He wanted friends, but only those who were good like Himself.

If we were to begin with the premise that there is NO God, why should there be people?  What purpose would we serve?
