SELLING YOURSELF

We've all heard that to be successful you must be able to "sell yourself".  Some people, prostitutes, politicians, criminal businessmen and dirty cops, literally do sell themselves, but that is not the sense of this saying.

The image makers of our world are hired to "sell" ideas, products and people. They are experts in presenting anything or anyone as superior than any other.  The fact that they are able to distort or enhance the truth and have us believe requires great skill and knowledge of human behavior.  It doesn't seem possible that we could be influenced so easily, but we are, some of us.

My interest in politics stems from a hope that I can help my children and theirs to enjoy a free existence unafraid of becoming pawns in the grand schemes of power hungry despots who would use any means to assume power over them by trickery.  When politicians use others to build their images and to suggest ideas and positions on policy which will get votes, who are we voting for, the candidate or the image maker?  When others write their speeches, who are we hearing?

Whatever anyone thinks of Newt, he is the smartest, most knowledgeable candidate out there right now.  I doubt if he even prepares a speech but speaks from the heart about things he knows and owns.  With him, what you see is Newt, not a room full of advisers. Those who rely on others for ideas and method disappoint us only because their promises were designed to get votes not intended for real policy.

If you sell a fake you, you will inevitably fail.
