The military is a dictatorship. All those brave men and women who VOLUNTEER to serve their country know this before they join. Isn't it ironic that they volunteer to surrender their freedom to preserve ours? What kind of people are willing to make such a sacrifice? With few exceptions, they are those among us who recognize that without the ability to defend our country we would become the victims of some foreign tyrant. They love their country.
It is too bad their country does not love and respect them in return. Their Commander-in-Chief in the Clinton and Obama administrations have demonstrated in speech and deed a dislike, if not hatred, of the military. A large number of Americans treated Vietnam veterans worse than they treated the enemy. Whatever the military decisions and by whomever they are made, the service person must obey. In war, there are no certainties. Things can go wrong. If we can't give our defenders the benefit of the doubt, the implication is that we are giving the enemy the benefit of the doubt. Should that be the case?
Memorial Day, which used to be celebrated with pride everywhere, gives tribute to all our fallen heroes. It has become a day off from work, the opening of the pool, a day at the beach or just a long weekend. Our history and survival are owed to these past and current heroes. If you can find the time, take a few minutes to remember that you owe all you have to their protection and service. Try to imagine how insecure you would feel if you didn't know they were there to protect you- even if you despise them.
May God protect those who protect us.
