Among mammals, generally, mothers are the fiercest defenders of their offspring. Most, without a thought about their own safety, would combat any threat to them with deadly force, That's the protective instinct.
The best part of mothers is not their fierceness in defending their children, but their equally tender, selfless love, at least until they do something wrong. No child should be raised without a mother. When it happens, it is a tragedy for the child. No tinkering with other options does the job with the same emotion, felt by the child, and offers the same feeling of safety and comfort. The duties of motherhood are something many, if not most, men avoid. Rarely would a father switch places with Mom.
All children, young and old, who have living mothers, should not have to wait for a special day of the year to show appreciation for them. Mothers are mothers 24 hours a day, every day! Motherhood doesn't stop when children reach a certain age, it is eternal. Even if they would prefer to "let go", most cannot.
Mothers ask for little in return. They don't expect anything in return but because they don't expect it, it doesn't mean that there aren't things children can do to show their appreciation, and it's not just flowers on Mothers' Day. If you are half as smart as your mother thinks you are, I don't have to tell you what they are.
