Our daily lives are saturated with things which can be used for good or evil. Beginning with words which can inspire or destroy to cars, cell phones and computers. You get the idea. We have protocols, rules and regulations and sometimes laws which deal with trying to control the evil while protecting the good uses. Guns should be no different.
Those unrealistic people who propose eliminating guns completely are delusional if they believe that will solve gun related problems. Their solution, a complete ban, would create a world in which only the evil doers would be armed and the rest of us at their mercy. Guns, used for self defense, are mans' best friend. When faced with danger from someone bigger and stronger or armed, a gun is the ultimate equalizer.
The right to bear arms,guaranteed by our constitution, has many purposes. Some are related to "peaceful" purposes such as hunting, destroying wild animals which present a danger to people or domestic animals, target shooting and more. The more important uses are related to self defense from criminals and oppressive government. A primary action by governments seized by tyrants is to disarm the population.
A banning of guns would serve only one purpose. Honest people would be dis-armed while only criminals and tyrants, who, of course, don't obey laws, would have guns to terrorize good people. Does that make sense?
Addendum: Today, there was a terrible incident in Colorado where some nut gunned down and killed and wounded a lot of innocent people in a theater. If there had been an armed spectator, some, or much, of the mayhem could have been prevented.
