I wrote previously about the sacrifices our military have made, and are still making, for their country. I compared those to some of the sacrifices we are asked to make for the welfare of our country. Obviously, there is no comparison, is there?
In these perilous times, we have asked union employees to "give back" some of their benefits to help avoid serious problems. Many, although reluctantly, have done that and more will. Those "give backs" were contractual benefits. Social Security benefits are also "contractual", more of a promise, so many believe they cannot be touched but are there seniors whose patriotism and financial condition would permit them to VOLUNTARILY surrender those benefits? There are discussions now about future retirees being "means tested", why not, on a voluntary basis, now? I believe there would be many takers. Seniors, generally, are great patriots.
Medicare is a different kind of problem, it is mandatory. Few, if any, private insurers would be willing to insure the high risk pool of seniors anyhow. If they were dumped into that market, no one could afford the premiums.
What DO you think, or do you?
