If I hear one more person define "The American Dream" in material terms, I'm gonna puke. First, it is not "The American Dream", it is a universal, human dream and it involves material things only as a consequence.
The "DREAM" is to be free and secure. Free from tyranny, to be, more or less, left alone to pursue happiness in whatever honest way we define it for ourselves, and without undue interference. The principles upon which our nation was founded guaranteed the kind of freedom none had ever known before in any society.
This dream has been eroded over time and recent events have nearly eradicated some of the more important aspects of freedom. Most successful businessmen agree that in today's business climate, they could not have started the companies they now own and operate. That means that companies which might have been started and provided jobs have not been started. Existing companies cannot grow to hire new people. Even a Jackass Democrat should be able to understand that the more businesses there are, the more jobs there will be.
The "American Dream" is not the nice house, two cars, four TVs and every electronic device known to man, but the OPPORTUNITY to earn all those things listed as the dream. When we destroy the opportunity, we have also deprived people of the fruits of the opportunity.
