Are there circumstances when personal rights must be relinquished in exchange for public service? No reasonable person would expect the military to have the right to unionize and to go on strike for more pay or benefits. Their service is too vital to permit that. But what about police, firemen, teachers and all those workers whose job it is to "serve the public"? The more vital the job, the more power unions have to extort concessions from the employer and since those in public employment work for the welfare of the community at large, those interruptions are disruptions of the common good. They do not threaten the welfare of a COMPANY, instead, they threaten the entire community, PEOPLE! When you tax people, there is a "contract" to provide services in exchange.
Public employees, because of the unique character of their jobs, must not be allowed to hold the community hostage under any circumstances. At the same time, even their politics are influenced by their job since the party and those candidates who vote on salaries and who promise "more" are more likely to get the employees' votes. In the "good old days", public employees were coerced into making political donations to the party in power. Now, the unions they belong to have assumed that role.
Rights are not easily relinquished but there are circumstances which, when you accept certain responsibilities, you must. If you are not willing to do that, don't take the job.
