THE LAST SAY

To resolve any dispute, some authority in needed to have "the last say". In the USA, it is the Supreme Court but the Court will hear, and rule upon, only the constitutionality of a disputed law.  Sometimes, when laws are unpopular but legal, the Congress can override or repeal them, but when the Congress and the President are bent on forcing their will on the people, who should have the last say?

Because legislators often have other agenda's than representing the people of their States, such as reelections, party pressure and pork, they are frequently susceptible to legal bribes, with taxpayer money, to vote for laws which citizens REALLY don't want.  When "representatives" don't represent our will, we have no voice in these matters.  There is no recourse in the courts if the constitution is not violated, and since congressmen and women can be corrupted, I propose that  if a majority of the States object to the law, such as Obamacare, that they have the last say and can nullify the law. This could be by a vote of the Governors or the people of each State at the next election by referendum.

When our legislators ignore the will of the people, there are always those dishonest voices which say, "You can always vote them out of office".  This, of course , is not true.  Incumbents RARELY lose an election unless the party has abandoned them.  The party faithful would vote for Mickey Mouse if he were their candidate. Even in serious matters, it is hard to mobilize enough people to act to rid ourselves of self-serving politicians.

Our current President is acting like a dictator, ruling by fiat when thwarted by Congress. Though apparently legal, many are a serious power grab, opposed by many states which are helpless in preventing them.  These too should be subject to nullification by a majority of the States.

If we are truly a system which is BY THE PEOPLE, the closer to the people decisions are made, the more true that statement would be.

Since writing the first part of this, the 0 has lifted the freeze on government salaries raising  the salaries of all federal workers by executive order.  What is left?
