When police go undercover, it is sometimes referred to as "wearing a beard" or simply "he's a beard" which is a disguised way of saying they're wearing a disguise. Other people wear a variety of disguises, especially women. They color their hair and faces, wear wigs or partial hair disguises, wear undergarments to alter their appearance and high heeled shoes to appear taller.("Yes, officer. She was 5'9"," No, she was really 5'2".) They wear a lot of jewelry to distract your eyes from body parts they're trying to conceal. Many also risk surgical procedures to achieve a desired look.
Men disguise themselves with beards (real ones), long hair ("Don't know if it was a man or a woman") and shoulder padding ("I pump"). Many wear expensive suits and ties to appear prosperous but they're actually on their way to the unemployment office.
The recent trend of body piercing is the most hideous but also the most effective disguise. When someone approaches whose ears, nose, tongue, lips and belly button are adorned with various types of jewelry, and their hair is a rainbow, you have to look away so that you could never identify them. ( "Have you seen a blue eyed, blond boy?" You gotta be kidding me. Some would rather you see their butts instead of their faces. ("I'd recognize his butt, officer.") I'm sure we're better off. Their butts start to look like faces with wry smiles.
As helpful, comical or disgusting some of these disguises are, it really reflects a low self image. Anyone who would go to such lengths to change, or distract others from, their appearance cannot be very happy The time, effort and money required to accomplish these disguises is substantial and is driven by the wish to appear to be someone they really are not. Why else would someone hide themselves behind these masks?
Reality can be harsh but it's honest. The false images of people presented by advertisers is responsible for most of this madness. There is a poem which contains this qualification for sanity, "If you can keep your head when all about you others are losing theirs......". It's a big IF, but it's worth pursuing.
