The recent disclosure that members of Congress are exempt from laws regarding "insider trading" came as a shock to most of us but it shouldn't have. Those guys are exempt from prosecution from a variety of laws which would land us in jail. Even when the laws are some they are not exempt from, they get a free pass: former Congressmen and Senators and some cabinet members who had tax problems which turned out to be simple "oversights", for example. Yeah!
I used to defend these people when others said they were all the same but there are some examples which prove I was wrong. The most glaring of these is when over 500 sitting Congressmen and Senators remained silent and allowed the prosecution to send Martha Stewart to prison for doing the same thing they ALL do! If any of these people were not corrupt, the first time they learned of this exemption they would have introduced legislation to end it. Whether or not they participated themselves, they should have ended it. They were the "lookout" in a robbery or were "in the car" when the liquor store guy was shot. Even worse, they were the "honest cop" who didn't report the crooked ones.
I can't see any legitimate reason these people should be exempt from any law unless it would hinder them from performing their duties or place them in personal danger. Their perks are too generous anyhow but they should not include criminal activity.
What do you think?
