I heard on the news today that Obamacare will require smokers to pay an extra 50% in premiums because of the bad health consequences of smoking which raises the costs of care. I can think of many situations and lifestyles which increase the costs of health care but which. as far as I know, will pay normal premiums.
Obesity, drug use, alcohol abuse, homosexual activities, dangerous sports, sugar eaters, junk food addicts, pre-existing conditions and I'm sure there are others, all have health risks which raise health care costs. Are we going to pick just one of these to penalize or, recognizing the folly of such a policy, just treat everyone the same. This policy rivals the obvious stupidity of auto insurance carriers which penalizes the insured for having an accident by raising their premiums. The whole purpose of insurance is to cover costs if you have an accident, while hoping it will never happen.
This new health care system will provide inferior service for everyone, cost more and bankrupt the country. In time, no other issue will come closer to destroying our nation, not even terrorism.
